Brick By Brick: Resiliency‍

This one is easy. To explain I mean; incredibly hard to actually do.

Resiliency is the ability to get back up after being knocked down.

It is the ability to fail and continue moving forward.

It is the ability to have continued success and not be scared of it.

Resiliency is maybe the most important factor when it comes to achieving a goal. Anything worth working for does not come without failures.

Failures can mean different things for different circumstances as well. If we continue to use our weight loss goal; we might think of failure as gaining a pound back. OR falling off our diet plan for a day or a week. OR failure could look like having sustained success and either taking our foot off the gas and becoming less strict. OR failure could look like self sabotage because we don't think we can continue, and it’s “too hard”.

Whatever the failure is; it is your job to be RESILIENT and push through. You need the ability to reorient yourself toward your goal and get back on track.

Resiliency is going through a failure and then go back to the plan for you achieving your goal. You need to be able to accept that failure is a part of the process, and get back on track as fast as possible.

The weight loss goal is a perfect one to explain this because there are so many opportunities for failure that are tangible.

One complaint I always hear is that going out to eat is hard, or going to a party is difficult. My answer is 3-fold for this. First, do not go. However, this is not always possible soooo…

Second, there are plenty of options at a restaurant and at a party that could align with your nutritional habits your building. AND, if there isn't (which is unlikely) you just make sure you refrain while you are there, other than enough food to sustain yourself and making sure the people you are with aren't uncomfortable by you not eating (if you care about that).

Third, just indulge in the night and get back on your nutrition plan tomorrow. Life is meant to be lived, and food is freaking delicious, so make sure the meal you eat is worth it and enjoy it.

The caveat to the third option is that the next day you need to be RESILIENT and get back on plan. You also cannot do this more than once in a while because then you are no longer building healthy habits; you are just eating out a lot and mixing a salad in every once in a while.

Additionally, resiliency means that you do not need to “make-up” for a slip up. If you indulge one night, that does not mean you have to workout for 2 hours and not eat the next day. Have the restraint and understanding that this is a long term change and process.

Stick to the plan. And when you fail; get back on the plan ASAP!

Yours in strength,

Nate
