New Year New Me

With one year ending and another beginning there is almost always resolution. We have goals from the previous year that went unaccomplished, or things we have been staving off for the “right” starting point. 

That starting point for many is the New Year!

I am surprisingly a fan of New Year Resolutions. Primarily because it gives all of us the opportunity for introspection; something many of us neglect and avoid. 

Resolutions are meant to RESOLVE things in your life and put yourself on a more productive path. It provides a short burst of motivation to pursue what we know we should have been the entire year prior.

Where people start to not like New Years resolutions is when 90% of people fall off the wagon 2-3 weeks into the new year. 

There are many causes for this…

Lack of motivation, lack of discipline, lack of knowledge on what to do, negative influences in your life, etc…

All of these are very valid. BUT… I do not believe any of these to be the primary place of blame.

I think most of the blame lies in not knowing your “why”.

The why is powerful. The why is why you do anything. The why is what gives you motivation, encourages you to build discipline, forces you to seek knowledge, and helps you block out negative influences.

If your why is strong enough you can accomplish whatever New Years resolution you set upon yourself.

My New Years Resolution is this. Be Healthier and Be More Able. My metrics for tracking this are as follows.

  1. Lose at least 30lbs
  2. Golf at least 12 18-hole rounds 
  3. Average 70k steps per week
  4. Do 2 VERY hard physical things this year
    1. The first will be doing the Presidential Traverse in NH with my friends.
    2. TBD

My why for this resolution is I am currently chronically in pain and want to be out of it. I haven’t taken the best care of myself when it comes to not being in pain so that will be a priority. Losing weight should accomplish that goal as well as PROPERLY training for difficult hikes and such.

The golf metric is more of a mental health thing. The past 2 years I have golfed 5 times per year. Golf is time consuming and time is something I have had approximately zero of the past 2 years. If I can golf 12 or more times this year that means I will have taken time for myself to do something fun!

Next week we will talk about what to do when we stumble on our goals and resolutions.
